Interview: Fashion Advice With Style Bubble’s Susie Lau

Style Bubble blogger, Susanna Lau – affectionately known as Susie Bubble – has been in Australia for the last few days covering Rosemount Australian Fashion Week for Sportsgirl. Despite her hectic schedule Susie kindly took the time to answer a few of our questions and dropped a hint that the Susie Bubble Style Guide could be hitting your coffee table in the not-too-distant future…

What were you doing as your profession when you first started blogging? (I ask because I always wondered how in hell you could afford such a spectacular wardrobe) I never buy anything at full price. I’m a bargain hunter and rely on sample sales, eBay, Yoox and jumble sales and charity shops. I was working in digital advertising when I started blogging and to be honest, most of my salary went on clothes…

What has been your favourite Fashion Week show so far and why? Thus far…. (and the week isn’t over yet…) I’ve liked Arnsdorf, Romance was Born, Therese Rawsthorne, Magdalena Velevska and Lover… I have a feeling I’ll love Ellery, Dion Lee and Josh Goot…. I don’t have a clear cut favourite as yet…

How does Australian design compare with world leaders e.g. in Europe? Obviously there are some influences from European/American designers, the ones that show in the main four fashion weeks but I don’t like to draw too many comparisons. It’s better to establish a style that suits the specific market rather than constantly comparing Australian designers to their European counterparts and I think for the most part, there is are unique Australian traits…such as the way climate consideration or nature infiltrates the collections…

What do you think of Australian style in general – people you see on the streets? I think they look great…. I’m here hanging out a lot with Tommy Ton of Jak and Jil and Phil Oh of Street Peeper so judging by the photos they’ve been getting, i think we’re all really impressed with the style… there’s a really lovely relaxed ease about the way girls dress here…

Tell us about your collaboration with Sportsgirl? They approached me to see whether I’d be up for blogging for them during RAFW and I was really interested in working with them knowing the collaborations they’ve done in the past. Obviously I jumped at the chance of coming back to Sydney again as I had such a great time last year. I think what Sportsgirl do as a mass market/high street brand is quite interesting especially when you look at their branding, their visual merchandising and the creative collaborations they do…

Does fast fashion or high street clothing play much of a role in your own wardrobe? Definitely! Of course I’m pretty faithful to the British ‘high street’ – Topshop, Whistles and COS are my favourites…

Have you ever considered taking a seat in the designer’s chair? No not really. I much prefer observing the work of designers. I don’t really think it’s right to assume that you can just BE a designer and given that I cover so many students or emerging designers’ work, it would be a bit cheeky of me to think that I can design.

When is the Susanna Lau style guide going to be published? Hmmm…wait and see!

Sometimes getting dressed in the morning can be such a drag. Do you ever have those days where you just can’t pull it together? Yeah, on the days when I’m violently ill which is sadly quite often as the traveling sort of wears me down a bit…. !

What’s your process when you get dressed each day? I look out of the window, check BBC weather, check my diary and throw on a bunch of things and hope for the best…

Who do you get ‘clothes envy’ of? – Someone who you wish you could murder for their wardrobe? The accessories designer Katie Hillier has a pretty fantastic wardrobe…

Can you give us your thoughts on a few items:
Stirrup pants They’re alright but sort of pointless if you cover up the stirrup with shoes…?
Cork wedges Cork is comfy. I like.
Blue jeans I’m not a jeans sort of person…. hate trying them on and I NEVER try anything on in stores…
Power suits I couldn’t pull one off but I like them on other people.

You make some fabulously bold fashion choices – especially with your accessories – but is there anything that you consider off limits or that you intentionally steer well clear of? Brown – I’m not very good with dark shades of brown…

Do you like it when your readers approach you on the streets? Sometimes…. I feel a bit weird in London if someone does it and I’m carrying my groceries or something… but most of the time it’s perfectly lovely…
