Human Potato Peter Dutton Reckons SSM Is Causing Poor Customer Service

Peter Dutton is irrefutable proof that in Australian politics you just kinda fail upwards.
The man voted ‘Most Likely to Lose a Game of Connect Four to a Dry Sponge‘ has today gone on a rather extraordinary rant, blasting major Australian companies for their support of marriage equality and, profoundly bizarrely, suggesting that the whole push to legalise SSM in Australia is leading to bad customer service.
Appearing on 2GB earlier today and speaking with, would you even believe it, Ray Hadley, Dutton launched a tirade aimed squarely at major Australian corporations after 20 business leaders representing the likes of QANTAS, Telstra, Optus, Apple, Holden, and Amex reportedly wrote to PM Malcolm Turnbull urging him to legalise same-sex marriage as it would be, by their assertion, good for business.
Dutton, head like a bucket full of burnt LEGO and all, responded by going apeshit all over Hadley’s radio show, asserting that “most Australians” are sick of companies jamming what he labels “PC views” down their throats.

“If they want to run for politics, well resign from their position, stick their hand up at the next election, but don’t jam your politically correct views down our throats.”

“Here’s a suggestion for Telstra. Instead of getting caught up spending your investors’ money, your shareholders’ money, on all these political causes, what about tidying up your own backyard first and providing a proper standard of care to your customers?”

“On the social issues, gay marriage or anything else, leave it up to the politicians, the leaders, to talkback hosts such as yourself [Ray Hadley], to normal people that can have those discussions.”

“I think frankly this is a debate that is worth having, because the customers are missing out, and the service is inferior. It needs to be addressed.”

Hooley bloody dooley.

Again, as we’ve stated for the umpteenth time, it is sodding well is not a “debate we need to have,” because the issue is one of imploring the law to not be discriminatory, not one where the there are two equal and morally balanced points to argue.
Regardless, equating businesses adding their voice to the push for marriage equality to a fall in customer service is a staggering thing for an elected official to suggest. It’s like stating that I, a largely sedentary career writer, am being prevented from becoming an Olympic pole vaulter due to the fact that the coaching staff are bastards.
In the considered words of every maths teacher I’ve ever had: Show your work, Pete.
