Housing Minister: If You Wanna Own A House, Just Get A High-Paying Job

Last night on Sky News, federal Victorian MP Michael Sukkar decided to run his mouth about how so totally possible it is for young people to buy a house.
Slightly ridiculous? Well, yes – because an MP on more than $190,000/year might tend to struggle just a little bit to understand the modern Aussie dilemma of earning very little in a time of completely unaffordable housing.
However, Sukkar does have the right to speak on the issue – he’s the Coalition MP tasked with tackling housing affordability in our (not-so-)fair country.
Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to be able to quite grasp the nuances of the situation – one of which being the discrepancy between the average Australian salary of $78,832 p.a. and the insanely high current housing prices, and another being job availability – because he seems to think that people should just, like, get a better-paying job. Duh.
“We’re also enabling young people to get highly paid jobs which is the first step to buying a house, it’s not the only answer but it’s the first step.”
He also speaks about the fact that he left uni “because the economy was good” and was able to forge a career and eventually buy two properties.

“I want to see young people like me, leave university, I was a terrible university student but I left university because the economy was so good, I got a great start and I was able to forge a career.”
We’re assuming he means the economy was by chance good when he actually completed his degree and finished university, however – not that he decided to leave university because the economy was good, as his statement implies. That’s what his Facebook page says, anyway. (He also completed his Masters in Law a small handful of years later.)
We can’t help but be reminded of Joe Hockey‘s infamous 2015 housing affordability statement, where he told first home buyers that they would simply have to “get a good job that pays good money”.
Anyway, lesson learned yet again everyone – we’ve just got to get a high-paying job. Problem solved!
Does anyone know anywhere that’s hiring shitloads of people, all on $150,000+ salaries? Asking for myself, and like, 12 million or so friends. Cheers.
P.S. Maybe Sukkar should’ve offered a recent design graduate a high-paying salary, and they wouldn’t have done this extremely weird Photoshop job on the header of his website.
