Harry Kewell Expected To Announce Retirement Today

Melbourne Heart captain, two-time World Cup team member and arguably Australia’s most well-regarded and greatest ever footballer, Harry Kewell is set to expected to announce his retirement from all forms of soccer this afternoon.

According to The ABC, Kewell’s contract with the A-League club will expire at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old, who scored 17 goals for the Socceroos over 52 matches, will play out the remainder of the season for the Heart to conclude a career that has included career high stints with Leeds United and Liverpool in the English Premier League, as well as the Melbourne Victory in the A-League, amongst others.

A press conference has been called for 2pm.

UPDATE: “I felt it was the right time to go out on my terms,” Kewell, 35, said this afternoon. “I wanted to be able to finish where I could still do things outside of football, all the things I couldn’t do as a footballer. I can do these things now.”
