Gaultier’s Winehouse Inspired Couture Show ‘Too Soon’

We thought Jean Paul Gaultier‘s recent couture collection was inspiring, however the recently departed figure behind the show’s tarty ode to 1950s nostalgia Amy Winehouse is perhaps a little too recently departed for some tastes. In particular Mitch Winehouse, the late singer’s father.

Mr Winehouse slammed Gaultier’s Paris Fashion Week collection for cashing in on his daughter’s image. He told UK magazine The Sun, “To see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on.”

He said, “We’re proud of her influence on fashion but find black veils on models, smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music in bad taste. It portrays a view of Amy when she was not at her best, and glamorises some of the more upsetting times in her life. That’s upsetting for her family.”

Gaultier intended the show to be a tribute to the singer and her unique signature style, but seeing that Amy Winehouse passed away less than a year ago is the homage – regardless of its good intentions – too soon?
