Galliano Issues Statement, Lagerfeld Weighs In

You know you’ve done something really controversial when the fat-hating, fur-loving Karl Lagerfeld feels the need to play moral barometer. The Chanel chief designer has spoken out regarding John Galliano’s anti-Semitic remarks, telling WWD that he is “furious” about the incident, in which Galliano was caught on video saying “I love Hitler” and slurring other abuse at cafe goers including “Dirty Jew face, you should be dead.”

“It’s a horrible image for fashion, because they think every designer and everything in fashion is like this,” Lagerfeld said. This seems sort of ironic considering his own controversial statements, a personal favourite being, “In France there are, I think, less than one per cent of people who are too skinny. There are nearly 30 per cent of young people who are too fat. So let’s take care of the zillions of the too fat before we talk about the percentage that’s left.”

Galliano has issued a public apology, stating that he denies the claims made against him and that “anti-semitism and racism have no part in our society.” Galliano has since been fired from Dior where he worked for fifteen years, faces trial and has checked into rehab for alcoholism. Good for him but as Jezabel rightfully notes, Rehab Does Not Cure Anti-Semitism.
