Gail Sorronda Sets Designs On Cavalli

Gail Reid, the talent behind monochromatic fashion label Gail Sorronda is set to lend her eye for romantic and structural womenswear to huge Italian fashion house Roberto Cavalli.

The Brisbane-born Paris-based designer is currently in Australia for the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF) where she will be showing her latest collection entitled Black Chalk as a finalist in the 2010 LMFF Designer Award. The winner receives a $10,000 prize and gets flown to their choice of either Florence or Paris for the opportunity to rub elbows with some international movers and shakers in the design world.

However, according to Frockwriter Reid doesn’t have to bank on the award to gain international attention. She has reportedly scored a gig with Cavalli’s headquarters in Florence to work as a consultant for the brand – an amazing opportunity, especially when you look at the career trajectory of other designers who started out working as freelance consultants, including Australian-raised Richard Nicoll who began his career consulting for Louis Vuitton alongside Marc Jacobs and is now headlining critically acclaimed runway shows.

The LMFF Designer Award is considered one of the country’s most highly-regarded fashion awards for emerging talent, and this year Reid will be in contest with a great mix of Australian talent including Dion Lee, Dhini, Gary Bigeni, Lui Hon, Konstantina Mittas and Therese Rawsthorne. The winner will be announced tonight…
