How To Make Your Hair Colour Last As Long As Poss In Iso, So You Can Look Good For Nobody

Howdy, friends – it’s time to talk colour saving. We’re weeks into isolation now and you might be starting to notice a wee bit of regrowth. Going to the hairdressers is still fine, but it might not be an option for you right now. So whaddya do? You can a) let your hair do its thing and deal with it later or b) attempt to prolong the hair colour for as long as possible. If you picked the latter, this yarn’s for you because we chatted to Nina Ratsaphong, hair extraordinaire and owner of Extra Silky salon in Sydney.

You may have seen one or two of Nina’s hair tutorials on IG lately, showing people how to master the blow wave or do a simple fringe trim in three minutes. Extra Silky voluntarily closed their doors last month due to the coronavirus pandemic, but have taken things online to stay connected. Nina knows a lot of people are going to be reaching for the scissors / colours to practise styles or whatnot, so she’s here to help.

“I just want to show off how to do it in my way as a hairdresser, so that people don’t have to do it blindly,” she told PEDESTRIAN.TV. So in the spirit of getting into it, we asked Nina for her best tips on colour saving.

Have at it.

Dark Hair / Light Regrowth

Spray coloured dry shampoo right on the roots to blur the line a little bit. Cute tip? “Use an eyeshadow that matches your shade on the part line” on your noggin. Nina also recommends touch-up sprays that you can find in a bunch of different shades as well as brunette shampoos.

Blonde Hair / Darker Regrowth

“Use normal white dry shampoo on roots to soften the dark line,” Nina said. That should do the trick. But since we’re all in isolation and with nowhere to go, now’s a great time to experiment with a bit of colour on the lighter bits of your hair.

Some easily accessible brands to get online are the totally vegan and cruelty-free labels Manic Panic and Brite Organix, she said. “Just be warned that the picture isn’t always what you will get so do a small test section first.” Always.

If you’re looking for a toning shampoo and conditioner, Nina recommends you get around De Lorenzo Silver Shampoo and the luxe Mr Smith Blond.

And if you have blonde hair and you’re keen to try a new colour, Nina’s got some advice for you too. If you’re going for a more pastel look, mix whatever colour you choose with some conditioner in a bowl. Then apply the colour on shampooed and dried hair for optimum results. Work in small sections and apply roots to ends with lots of product to make sure you’ve achieved even coverage. And don’t forget to wear gloves.

“Don’t wear a top you have to take off over your head,” Nina added. “Wear a robe or a button down or just a towel.”

Copper or Red Hair

Try and use Manic Panic products or other coloured semi-permanent dyes for this hair colour to keep it shining bright. Nina also highly recommends the De Lorenzo copper shampoo.

Colour saving aside, we also chatted to Nina about how to cut your roommate’s hair in iso – the biggest trust exercise there ever was. You can read those tips at the link below. There are also a heap more DIY videos on Nina’s Instagram, otherwise known as heaven.

Anyway, see you on the other side.
