Exploding Basketball Leaves Woman With Burns At Popular Melbourne Beach

File this one squarely under “sometimes people are utter bastards.”

A young woman has suffered burns to her face and arms after a stray basketball reportedly exploded in her face after she picked it up on a popular Melbourne beach.
The incident, which occurred on March 18th, is being investigated by the arson and explosives police squad amid reports that a group of men may have deliberately rolled the ball towards her.
Shortly after 10:40pm on the night in question the woman, a 21-year-old from Kerang, was walking along the popular Half Moon Bay beach at Black Rock, SE of the Melbourne CBD. Police state she was walking ahead of a 37-year-old Clayton man who she was with, coming across the basketball lying on the sand. As she picked it up, the ball exploded in her face, leaving her with burns which she dove into the water to attempt to cool down. She was later taken to hospital to treat her injuries.
Police are asking for assistance in their enquiries, with reports claiming that the basketball may have had sparklers attached to it. There are also reports that suggest a group of men may have rolled the ball towards the woman and then walked away.
At this stage police remain unsure as to whether the men had intended for anyone to pick the ball up.
Anyone who might have information about the incident is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
