Emma Mulholland Is A Tropical Rebel

A lot’s changed since we first encountered Emma Mulholland. Back then she was a TAFE grad who worked at Ksubi’s Paddington atelier customising one off denim pieces. Today she’s one of the most heralded young designers in the country and has since shown her work at Australian Fashion Week, produced another collection and caught the eye of discerning DONDA overlord Kanye West.

Her AW12 range, Tropical Rebel, harks back to the ocean motif established in her graduate collection but pares back the embellishments and colour explosions for a more wearable vision of that surf meets streetwear tip she’s been riding. While still firmly entrenched in the holy trinity of the 90s, surf culture and Australiana, the range draws equal inspiration from Courtney Love and films like the The Craft and Poison Ivy which lends a darker edge to what is otherwise a bright and cheery collection and her first foray into menswear.

Can’t wait to cop that ‘Great White’ neon fleece jumper am I right guys?

The lookbook was shot by longtime collaborator Byron Spencer, styled by former Oyster editor Paul Bui and features models Ollie Henderson and Alex Smith. Hair by Ryan Mitchell and make up by Becca Gilmartin.

The collection is strictly limited and will be available exclusively through The Grand Social.
