Electrician Arrested In Rural NSW For Allegedly Helping ISIS Design Rockets

A 42-year-old Australian-born electrician has been arrested for alleged terrorism offences in the rural NSW town of Young, located approximately 4 hours west of Sydney and 2 hours north of Canberra.

AFP Commissioner Andrew Colvin says that the man had allegedly been researching missile technology for the Islamic State:
“He’ll be charged with a number of offences which include two serious foreign incursion offences under the Commonwealth Criminal Code, which carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

“With these offences, we will allege that he has utilised the internet to perform services for ISIL, activities in the Syria and Iraq conflict, from Australia in the following ways.

“Firstly, by researching and designing a laser warning device to help warn against incoming guided munitions used by coalition forces in Syria and Iraq. And secondly, we will also allege that he has been researching, designing and modelling systems to assist ISIL’s efforts to develop their own long-range guided missile capabilities.”
While it might seem kind of insane that a sparky in rural Australia would be designing long range missiles for ISIS, the police believe his research to be legit:
“We will be alleging that the material that he was intending to provide to ISIL, the research he was doing, was credible.”
NSW Police raided the man’s property this morning after an 18-month investigation by the AFP. They believe the man to have been working alone and will not be making any further arrests.
Malcolm Turnbull gave a press conference announcing the arrest, claiming that the man’s actions were not related to any planned attack on Australian soil and praising the work of the AFP:
“This is yet another example of the excellent work the men and women of the Australian Federal Police and all our security agencies are doing in identifying and disrupting alleged assistance to ISIL.”

The man has been remanded in custody and will appear at Young Local Court this afternoon to face charges.
