Dozens Injured, Buildings Destroyed As Blast Rocks Merseyside, UK

A large explosion has demolished buildings in the Wirral area of Merseyside, outside the northern UK city of Liverpool, bringing a hail of bricks and debris down around surrounding streets and injuring at least 32 people.
Local emergency services believe that the blast, which occurred around 9.15pm local time was related to a gas leak. A dance studio and a Chinese restaurant have reportedly collapsed in the wake of the explosion.
“It’s all complete rubble,” said Liverpool Echo reporter Josh Parry, with photos on social media showing streets littered with bricks and building materials.

According to North West Ambulance Service, two of those caught up in the blast are in “serious condition”, while 30 others have so far been treated for minor injuries.

Bystanders say that the explosion sent a huge plume of dust and smoke into the sky, and those nearby felt the ground shake. “Our daughter ran in and ducked for cover like there was gunfire,” said one eyewitness.

Local MP Alison McGovern described the situation as “very serious” and urged those nearby to stay away so that emergency services could do their job.
