Dion Lee Cements That Thongs Trend, Sends Models Down NYFW Runway In Havaianas

Like it or not, it looks like thongs are definitely making a return for 2019. Yes, thongs. As in Havaianas, the rubber flip-flops you wore religiously with your denim miniskirt/baby tee combo (or boardies and surf tee) from the years of 2004-2008.

The return of the humble thong started at Copenhagen Fashion Week last month, where the fashion set were spotted repping the rubber beauties before/after shows.

But it’s Dion Lee‘s NYFW show yesterday that’s, in my opinion, cemented this trend. When an actual designer sends models down the runway in a controversial item? That item will absolutely make it’s way down to our pleb wardrobes. Especially when said item is affordable and easily accessible.

Dion Lee teamed thongs with real fancy gear – like this cobalt blue suit situation above, as well as all-out cocktail frocks.

Even quasi-workwear got the Havi’s treatment.

I say quasi bc that top is literally a bra. But hey, casual office – excellent power outfit, IMO.

Basically, the way to wear your thongs this coming summer is with your high fashion threads – not your cutoffs. It’s about the juxtaposition of casual and formal, as opposed to “oi just shoving my Havi’s on to go to the corner shops, m8”.

We would be wasting our time fighting against this trend now, people. Just give in, I say.
