Dickie Wilkins Copped A Roasting On ‘Today’ Over His Most Famous Gaffe

Live TV is an unforgiving bastard at the best of times, and when you’re dealing with cascading breaking news stories it gets even harder.
Still, if you’re thinking about getting into the game then please – for the love of dog – always check your sources.
Dickie Wilkins, veteran entertainment reporter at Nine‘s ever-present ‘Today,’ has had a lot of highlights throughout his career. But the one that keeps coming back to bite him is the infamous 2009 incident where, live on air, Wilkins relayed a press report that claimed Jeff Goldblum had died while filming in New Zealand.
‘Course this was during an otherwise-chaotic broadcast of the show, which at the time was following the minute-by-minute updates regarding the death of Michael Jackson.
Nevertheless, Dickie had gotten bit by a fake news report and Goldblum, as we all know, made a swift recovery from his death in New Zealand to be the perfectly healthy and alive person that he remains to this day.
So when a Goldblum-heavy day of news like yesterday hits, it was really only a matter of time before someone put Wilkins on roast.
Reporting this morning on both Goldblum’s recently announced deal to appear in ‘Jurassic World 2,’ AND the fever-dream like scenario that saw him on the streets of Sydney handing out free sausages, Dickie’s co-stars couldn’t resist giving him a good old fashioned gee up.
It’s good to see him looking so good,” chirped Karlos Stefanovic, before Lisa Wilkinson joined in with “those rumours of his demise were very, VERY premature.”
Dickie, bless him, took it all in his stride.
But that doesn’t change the fact that no one forgets a gaffe.
Least of all Jeff Goldblum.
