Death Marrs Milan Men’s Fashion Week

Men’s Fashion Week is currently underway in Milan but official proceedings have been overshadowed by the untimely death of French model Tom Nicon, who fell to his death from the fourth story of an apartment complex in Milan. The news was first broken by fantastic NZ menswear blog Isaac Likes who notes that “the general consensus among those who knew Nicon is that he took his own life.”.

Nicon, who appeared for the likes Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Gareth Pugh, was just 22 years of age and his untimely death follows that of South Korean model Daul Kim who took her own life in November and American model Ambrose Olsen who hanged himself in April. It’s a terrifying indictment of the Fashion Industry and we can only hope it sparks honest discourse about the self-esteem and depression issues that befall a certain segment of people in the fashion industry.

But it didn’t end there. Death also overshadowed what was arguably Milan’s most anticipated show. For the first time since he hanged himself in February, Alexander McQueen’s eponymous label was in complete control of its new Creative Director and former Second-in-Charge, Sarah Burton. Dubbed Pomp and Circumstance Burton’s Spring 2011 collection paid homage to the late designer’s Saville Row beginnings while seamlessly incorporating the regal flourishes for which McQueen was known. The mood was understandably somber with Burton eschewing the customary end of show bow. Check out the collection via style.com
