Court Hears Jill Meagher Attacker Admitted To Rape, Strangling

Today prosecutors told a Melbourne court that the 41-year-old man charged with the murder of Melbourne woman Jill Meagher admitted he had abducted Ms Meagher, raped and strangled her.

The following information was presented by prosecutors based on what Mr Bayley allegedly revealed in a recorded interview with homicide detectives (via The Age):

Adrian Bayley grabbed Jill Meagher just eight minutes after she had left a bar to walk home, a court has heard today.

Mr Bayley dragged Ms Meagher into a nearby laneway and raped and strangled her, the Melbourne Magistrates Court was told.

And Mr Bayley admitted to killing the ABC staffer before burying her body on a roadside, the court heard.

The disappearance of Jill Meagher took place in September 2012 and led to an extensive social media campaign that received nation-wide attention until, horribly, police uncovered her remains in a shallow grave with assistance from Bayley. However, according to a story in the Daily Mail Bayley is pleading not guilty to the charges relating to Ms Meagher – despite having received two new rape charges as recently as the 4th of March for sexual assaults that took place in Elwood, Melbourne.

Meagher’s parents, husband and brother sat in court today during the prosecution summary. More to follow as the hearing progresses.
