Byron Bay Woman Handed 4 Years In Jail Over Death Of Bali Police Officer

Byron Bay woman Sara Connor has been sentenced to four years in jail over her role in the death of a police officer in Bali, after a huge four month trial throughout which she continually professed her innocence.

Connor was found guilty of fatal group assault in relation to the death of Wayan Sudarsa. Connor’s boyfriend, British DJ David Taylor, confessed to bashing Sudarsa but maintained that he did so in self-defence. He was also convicted of fatal group assault and was sentenced to six years in prison.
The seven months Connor has already served in prison will be deducted from her sentence.
One of the more sensational aspects of the case was that Connor cut up the police officer’s cards after his death. Connor claimed she did this to protect the officer from identity theft, but the judge did not accept that claim, instead agreeing with prosecutors that it was intended to hide guilt.
Throughout the trial, Connor claimed her only role was attempting to break up the fight between Sudarsa and Taylor, which is why she says she sat on Sudarsa’s chest. She insists she was only ever trying to protect the victim. Taylor insisted that Sudarsa was alive when they left him on the beach.
Both Connor and Taylor have seven days to appeal their verdict.
