As someone with curly hair, I actually hate hair wash day. It's a long-ass routine that often leaves me with sore arms, a hefty water bill and a clogged drain. So it'll come as no surprise when I tell you that I rely heavily on dry shampoos, from traditional powders and aerosols through to newer liquid formulas -- I've tried hundreds.

Lately, I've been trying Bouf's new Grease Lightning dry shampoo, a wet-to-dry, aerosol-free fine liquid mist. It was formulated to soak up excess oil at the root without leaving chalky white residue, gritty scalp buildup, or that stiff, crunchy feeling that more traditional dry shampoos can leave you with.

Like any Bouf drop, the 'Bouf heads' (their TikTok and IG community) didn’t waste any time getting their hands on it. The main takeaway everyone's yapping about right now? How much of a game-changer the formula is for people with dark hair.

While Bouf didn't invent the liquid dry shampoo category, they're joining the major shift in the beauty space toward "wet-to-dry" micellar mists and non-aerosol formulas.

So how does Bouf's Grease Lightning work?

Loaded with ingredients like silica (to absorb grease), panthenol (to keep roots hydrated, not stripped), and hydrolysed wheat protein (for shine and frizz control), you just spritz the fine liquid mist straight onto sectioned roots, massage it through with your fingers (or a comb), and watch it dry down instantly into a fresh, matte finish.

Also, don't get confused (like some of us first did) and assume because it's a "wet-to-dry" product that that means you use it on wet hair. The 'wet' part just refers to the liquid spray itself, which dries down in seconds once it hits your roots. The product actually needs dry hair to work. The star ingredient, silica, works by binding to natural scalp oils and sebum. If applied to damp or wet hair, the silica will absorb water instead of oil, which ruins the formula, prevents it from drying properly, and leaves hair feeling sticky or weighed down.

How much is Bouf's Grease Lightning?

One of the best parts about Bouf is its affordability. Grease Lightning will set you back $29.95, which is a helluva lot cheaper than other liquid dry shampoos on the market that start around the $50 mark.

Is it worth the hype?

So far, I'm loving it. I love the fact that you don't get a white cast or any kind of powdery buildup (which means we can stretch out wash day even longer -- IYKYK). The price point is also a huge win!
