4 Colour Hacks To Protect Your Luscious Blonde Locks From Becoming A Hair Catastrophe

If there’s anything I’ve learned since going blonde, it’s that the colour is high maintenance. You need a good colourist to get it right in the first place and you sure as heck better be prepared to look after it once they do.

When you use the right products and treat your lush locks right, your hair looks like a million bucks. So putting in the extra effort is definitely worth it. And look, when I say ‘high maintenance,’ I just mean you have to actually pay it a little attention.

It’s not actually that hard – in fact just four changes to your routine should sort the whole thing out.

1. Use purple shampoo already

I still remember the first time my newly-blonde hair got the purple shampoo treatment. I was actually shook by how much of a difference it makes to the colour. I was also mildly annoyed that no-one told me sooner, although to be fair it’s very possible they did and I just wasn’t paying attention. So please let me tell you in writing to use purple shampoo for the love of god!

John Frieda just released a brand new formula for their Violet Crush Intense Purple Shampoo. In a nutshell, it uses fancy technology that I don’t understand to let the pigment penetrate further into your hair. The result being that you can get rid of that gross brassy colour in one wash. Obviously follow this up with purple conditioner.

2. Give it a treatment every week

On top of the shampoo and conditioner, you should be using a hair mask once a week. Obviously, you also want this to be specialised for blonde hair. It’ll help strengthen and re-lighten your hair. In fact, something like this Go Blonder Lemon Miracle Masque can actually help create new bonds for your hair strands so they’re less brittle and prone to breakage.

3. Protect it from the heat

Your blonde hair simply cannot handle the heat. As it turns out, that brassy colour can actually be caused by heat styling and sun damage. As can dry, brittle strands. I, for one, am very guilty of using a straightener just about every day, and it’s not like every blonde can just hang indoors all summer to avoid UV rays from the sun.

The solution is to whack on a solid heat-protecting hair product before you style your hair or sunbake. Problem solved.

4. Stop over-washing it

I always thought this was just me being a little lazy, but it turns out I was very right to wait as long as possible between washes. When you scrub-a-dub too frequently it strips the essential moisture out of your hair, the upshot of which is faded hair colour. Since becoming blonde I’ve noticed my hair is dryer anyway, so I can hold off an extra day or so without looking like a greaseball.

There you have it, give your blonde locks a little extra love and they’ll help you look like the absolute bombshell that you are.
