Blogster Awards Lifestyle Finalists: Their Workspaces

What’s your workspace look like? Is it a mess of papers, pens and old coffee cups? Is it covered in porcelain cats? Is it  your couch? We asked the finalists in the 2013 Ultrabook Blogster Awards Lifestyle category (paired with Inside Out Magazine) to show us what their workspaces look like.

This is where I work. Where the little skeleton friend and I hang out. Drinking coffee, perusing the inter-web, taking photos, making things, taking photos of things we are making, and generally bloggin’ about. Yep, It’s pretty cool. Sometimes I wish I had a scruffy little dog to sit at my feet, but alas, ‘No’ says the landlord, but man that would be awesome.

My workspace is transient. I move between what you see in this photograph (me being professional), my couch (me not being in bed) and my bed (me being a lazy ass). However, sitting up in a chair like a regular human, I feel focused and inclined to do my best work. Placed, in a photogenic manner, are interesting books (when I’m writing, I like to know others are too), my iPad and lots of other distracting bits and pieces. The fridge isn’t too far from this spot either!

Bloggers see blog posts everywhere, but the place my posts come to life is right here at my desk. Miss J has her own desk right next to mine so we can work on our projects together.  We both like to colour in. We have lots of natural light and a gallery of family photos to keep us company.  The coffee machine is a few steps away and I keep fresh flowers on my desk to remind me nature is the best decorator.  Happy days.

We were going to just take a photo of our iPhones because that’s where 80% of our work gets done, however, if you want an insight into our brains then this shrine in our spare room explains it all a bit better. This is HQ, where most of the stock of our candles are stored and where we visually plot and plan the direction of Citizens. At the moment it looks like we’re slowly morphing into a Sigourney Weaver-Cindy Crawford-Brooke Shields in Blue Lagoon-tree house-warehouse-shrine. Sums us up pretty well, actually!

Most of my regular blogging would
happen sitting on my bed with my two puppies nearby, some inspiration
and a cup of tea. I love that blogging can be done from anywhere though
and you aren’t limited to an office. I’ve blogged from the road, hotels,
cafes and even overseas. I love that when inspiration strikes all you
need is a laptop and good internet connection.

I spend a lot of time in my workspace, much of which consists of me staring around the room waiting for that light bulb moment where all my ideas flood through my brain and end up on my screen (sometimes this takes longer than others!) My husband and I have transformed this room into an all purpose space, we painted a chalkboard wall which I use to brainstorm ideas for new blog posts.

I work at my kitchen benchtop looking over a pond full of goldfish, close to green tea and Tim Tams!  It’s a simple space – perfect for curating lookbooks of fantastic interior design and showcasing the professionals behind it.

My workspace is inside my head which is fortunate as it means I can take it with me wherever I go.  Thanks to technology I can write, edit and post stories to my blog from anywhere in the world as long as there is a data signal. When I’m struggling with a difficult topic and need help formulating my ideas, I’ll head down to Bondi and stroll along the promenade. The ocean is an amazing ally when it comes to idea generation.

SUBMITTED BY THE ROOM ILLUMINATED

My workspace ‘comes alive’ so to speak when the sun goes down, the kids are in bed and the wine is poured. With limited space being a factor and my comfort being paramount, my lounge is my workspace. The great thing about curating The Room Illuminated is that most of the ‘work’ takes place out of my house, and in the warm, welcoming homes of the spaces I photograph. Once that’s all done, I just need a comfortable place to sit to work on the images, communicate with my contributors and update my followers.

As a toddler/knitting mum hipster duo on any given day our workspace may have:

  • Coffees (don’t even talk to me until I’ve had my babycino)
  • Knitted toy sloths wearing knitted clothing (necessary)
  • Dora and/or David Bowie playing in the background (we’re thinking of making a remix)
  • The biggest mess you have ever seen (ever)

Our occupational hazards include:

  • Swallowing small objects (mostly mum)
  • Falling asleep on stairs (both)
