We Asked A Bunch Of Straw-Haired Blondes How They Keep Their Hair Alive

Being blonde is HARD WORK. I know, I used to be one. A bottle one, that is – see, if you’re naturally blonde and ~blessed~ with even, bright tones, you’re laughing. But if you need to visit the salon on the regular to get the shade you love? LOL, welcome to hell bitch.

See, lightening your hair constantly can really play havoc on it’s texture. Think dry, brittle ends and a complete lack of shine. Not to mention blonde goes brassy and shit REAL quick, if you’re not careful.

Luckily there’s plenty of folks who have paved the way for rookies and know what’s up when it comes to products that a) really work and b) work harder than Kris Jenner during a Kardashian scandal.

We hit up a bunch of long-time salon blondes (who now have excellent hair, btw) for their hot tips.

OLAPLEX (IN SALON)

“The two steps of Olaplex you have done at the salon (you can’t buy them online and just do it at home) are heavy duty and I’m pretty sure they contain the magical formula that rebonds the hair so it doesn’t break when you bleach the shit out of it. The at home third step, which you can purchase usually in your salon is more of a leave-in conditioner that isn’t as heavy duty. I’ve tried to buy the first two steps online but you can’t without a salon abn, but most salons offer the treatment and it’s very worth it.” – Pru.

Olaplex makes my hair soft and shiny and feels like it is actually rebuilding the follicle. I had a super tragic bleach incident and it’s the only thing that keeps my hair from looking like straw. You need to use it on clean towel dried hair and leave it on like a mask for at least 20 minutes. Some girls I know leave it on overnight. It’s worth getting a bottle and seeing if it works for you for sure. I haven’t found anything else that worked as well. – Katie.

BUMBLE & BUMBLE HAIRDRESSER’S INVISIBLE OIL PRIMER

Bumble & Bmble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer, $40

“I put this into damp hair before blow drying and just find it hydrates my hair, reduces frizziness and protects it from heat styling but, being a spray, doesn’t weigh hair down like some serums/creams can.” – Lucy.

PANTENE THREE MINUTE MIRACLE CONDITIONER

Pantene Three Minute Miracle Repair And Protect Conditioner, $6.99

If you’re on a budget, get stuck in bumfuck-nowhere or need some kind of late night emergency mega-conditioner, 3 Minute Miracle by Pantene is a pretty good and accessible backup. It’s at almost every supermarket and it’s cheap-cheap.I got given a bunch to trial and used it like conditioner a few times a week for a while, and my colourist was like “wtf have you been doing your hair feels amazing”. – Noelle.

DAVROE REBUILDER PROTEIN HAIR RECONSTRUCTOR

Davroe Rebuilder, $17.95

“This treatment makes my blonde hair super soft and it feels thicker and protected. I put it on towel dried hair and it foams up a bit, then I leave it on for 5 minutes and when I wash it off my hair instantly feels super soft. I also use their Tame Detangler to make sure I don’t snap my tangled hair when I brush it. Another positive point for me – Davroe is vegan.” – Jayne.

ACTIVANCE LEAVE-IN TREATMENT

Activance Original Leave-In Treatment, $55

So my hair kept snapping from colouring it blonde and wouldn’t grow but this treatment has been so good for restoring it. It’s recommended for fine hair, slow growing hair and colour damaged hair. Basically I’ve noticed my hair is heaps thicker and snaps less. After you wash your hair you just spray evenly across the scalp, massage it in and leave it in. – Cassie.

FUDGE PROFESSIONAL CLEAN BLONDE

Fudge Professional Clean Blonde Violet Toning Shampoo, $21.99

This keeps myhair silky and lifts the brassy tones. Every time I use the shampoo and conditioner together, I get asked if I’ve had my hair done. – Sonja.

SHU UEMURA ART OF HAIR ULTIMATE REMEDY MASQUE

Shu Uemura Art Of Hair Ultimate Remedy Extreme Restoration Masque, $68

This mask made my hair super soft again, like it hadn’t been dried to oblivion by bleach. It also made it deliciously manageable and flippy again – which is a big ask for my bushel of hair. It feels and looks to be doing more actual conditioning than a regular conditioner, or even some hyped up ones. – Laura.

KEVIN.MURPHY BLONDE.ANGEL

Kevin.Murphy Blonde.Angel Colour Enhancing Treatment, $42.95

The Blonde.Angel Wash (shampoo) doesn’t make hair feel dry, and the Blonde.Angel Treatment is super moisturising compared to all other purple treatments for blonde I’ve done. It also smells amazing and while it’s expensive to get both, they are super concentrated so you don’t need to use a lot. – Alison.

My hair tangles SUPER easily, and I’ve found using Blonde.Angel treatment means it stays tangle-free for days after use. – Jagan.

REDKEN PH-BONDER

Redken PH-Bonder, salon only.

My hair feels incredibly soft and is a lot stronger after I put it in my hair. It also protects it a lot more from heat damage and I go back less often for hair cuts from damaged ends. – Catherine.

CHRISTOPHE ROBIN SHADE VARIATION CARE NUTRITIVE MASK IN BABY BLONDE

Christophe Robin Shade Variation Care Mask In Baby Blonde, $67

A super, super nourishing colour variation treatment that doesn’t overtone your hair. I leave it on (when I am blonde – not pink!), for a good 15-20 minutes and it brightens the f out of my hair, without turning it purple/grey. It also leaves my hair super soft, unlike most colour variation treatments I’ve used in the past. – Georgia.

SEBASTIAN PROFESSIONAL PENETRAITT MASQUE

Sebastian Professional Penetraitt Masque, $38

This shit changed my life. Using religiously for 6 years. It’s a deep conditioning treatment that puts moisture back in hair. It works fast and is weightless afterwards unlike some deep treatments that weigh my fine hair down. Gives you hair that feels like actual hair basically as blonde hair can feel like straw. – Marta.

VITAFIVE CPR FRIZZY SILKY FX JOJOBA OIL TREATMENT

Vitafive CPR Frizzy Silky FX Jojoba Oil Treatment, $28.95

I’m a every-6-weeks blonde foils kinda gal, and I’ve found this is great for immediate moisture prior to straightening. It makes my hair so shiny, and seems like it pulls all the broken hair fibres together. Not sure about lasting effects of this but know it works if your hair is looking super dry after a blow dry and you’ve still gotta straighten it.

LA BIOSTHETIQUE PROTECTION COULEUR BLONDE .32

La Biosthetique Protection Couleur Blonde .32 Shampoo, $43.50

I’m a warm blonde, and this is so excellent at keeping it more of a honey shade (not cool, icy) and also keeps it super, super glossy. – Hollie.
