9 Hospitalised After Balcony Collapses Under Partiers At Brissy Share House

Nine people were taken to hospital in Brisbane last night after the balcony they were dancing on collapsed underneath them.
The collapse happened at around 7:30pm last night, at a rented student share house on Highland Terrace in St Lucia where a 100-strong party was in full swing.
Although some media outlets have reported that there were at least 20 people on the balcony when it collapsed, people at the party have said that there was no indication that the small rear deck was about to give way.
Julia Saleemi, one of the witnesses, told the ABC:
“I have photos to prove that this balcony should have not collapsed under even 20 people. Five to seven people were on it and it just collapsed underneath us.

It was just horrendous to see, I was just next to it and just saw it, I just heard cries and screams.”
Fortunately there are no injuries more serious than broken bones, cuts and abrasions, but as Saleemi rightly pointed out, “it could have ended in someone’s death.
So not only is the rental housing market trying to kill us figuratively, it’s also trying to literally murder us now, too. Brisbane City Council is investigating the accident. In the mean time, let’s keep all our dance floors on solid ground.
