The Pirelli calendar is one of the most anticipated photography moments of the year – but where once it was synonymous with, well, naked ladies – in the last few years it’s become more about empowerment and strong themes. There was Annie Liebovitz‘s 2015 calendar that featured powerful women fully-clothed, like Ava DuVernay, and 2018’s all-black take on Alice In Wonderland.
The 2019 calendar follows the same route of providing a strong theme for the women in it’s photos, this time about women and ambition, and was shot by Scottish photog Albert Watson in April this year.
It stars uber ballet dancer Misty Copeland, models Gigi Hadid and Laetitia Casta, as well as Ozark‘s Julia Garner, among others.
It will tell four stories of women either working towards career goals, or grappling with the dramas that come from success. As many outlets have noted, it’s a bit of a weak theme considering the #MeToo movement happened this year, but it’s definitely a play into female empowerment.
The official images are yet to be released, but Pirelli has dropped some BTS shots that are phenom.
Here’s Laetitia Casta starring as an aspiring painter with her “boyfriend”, played by Ukranian dancer Sergei Polunin.
Gigi is meant to be an heiress having a bit of a mid-life crisis.
Misty plays an aspiring dancer who pole dances to make cash on the side.
And Julia Garner is an aspiring botanical photographer.
“I didn’t want to take a bunch of models down to the beach and have them take their tops off,” said Albert Watson of the shoots.
“It seemed old-fashioned. I was more interested in telling the stories of four different women.”
