Wallaby David Pocock Arrested After Coal Mine Protest

Yesterday afternoon, we reported that former Wallabies captain David Pocock had chained himself to a digger in protest against a controversial coal mine in northern NSW.

The rugby player was part of a long-running protest against the Maules Creek mine in the Laird Forest, and yesterday, joined a group of 30 other protesters on the site.
The Sydney Morning Herald report that, after spending around 10 hours chained to the digger, Pocock was taken into police custody, along with local farmer Rick Laird.
Pocock has since been released, and per a statement on Twitter, is sticking to his guns over the protest, citing a long history of civil disobedience to highlight social injustice:
It appears he wasn’t too rattled by his time behind bars:

The 26-year-old hopes that his profile as an athlete will draw attention to the protest. “In 2014, to put a coalmine in the middle of a state forest just doesn’t seem to make any sense,” he said.

“The local people are not only concerned about the effects of this mine on the climate in the future but also how it affects the water table. When you’re living around the mine, that’s stuff you have to think about.”
