“Trapped” Bernard Tomic Admits He’s Only Playing Tennis For Cold Hard Cash

Aussie tennis enigma Bernard Tomic was the subject of an incisive interview on Sunday Night, and if you’re one of the many, many fans who can’t abide by his all-or-nothing approach, sorry: his chat with Mel Doyle probably won’t make you appreciate him any more.

The 24-year-old admitted that he’s in the sport solely for the money, which feels like an utterly taboo take in a nation which places such an emphasis on ‘doing it’ for the fans, the country, or for pride alone.

Tomic revealed that cash has essentially become his main motivating factor; after describing his family’s humble beginnings in Australia, the first-round Wimbledon wipeout said “living in all these lavish houses and property around the world, it’s my choice. It’s something that I’ve worked for.”

Outside of the cash, he said he feels “trapped” by the expectations placed upon him to play tennis, and that “I have to do it.”
In regards to fans who are perhaps more used to seeing their heroes display gut-busting efforts, Tomic simply said that spectators are under no obligations to watch him play the game. Tomic’s own admission he’s built his entire career on “50%” effort seems like fair warning for would-be spectators.

Despite calling his achievements to date “amazing”, Tomic also reckoned there’s precisely zero chance he’ll fall in love with the game in the way some of his pathologically obsessed opponents are wont to do, and that it’s just a job. Nothing more, nothing less.
In fact, the dude said there’s not really much at all that makes him feel anything. “Not many things can make me super happy,” Tomic reckoned.

“I don’t like to get super happy about anything.”

He couched that viewpoint by saying winning a Grand Slam might just do it, but look, the grass is always greener on the other side of the net. Catch the full interview HERE.
