‘The Simpsons’ Is Getting Dangerously Close To “Predicting” The World Cup

Okay, okay, we know. We know. We know if you dig deep enough into The Simpsons, you can apply anything they’ve ever put to air to just about any real-life situation and claim the show “predicted” it. And we know there’s a fair amount of water yet to flow under the World Cup bridge before any of this happens.

But what if…

…maybe…

The Simpsons kinda winds up…

…predicting the World Cup final?

The yarn goes thusly: S09E05 of The Simpsons entitled The Cartridge Family opens with an international soccer/football game being played in Springfield. Those Simpsons obsessives among you will clearly remember it, no doubt. The match is billed as the one that will “determine once and for all which is the greatest nation on Earth: Mexico or Portugal.”

Now if you’ve been following the World Cup proceedings will recognise the fact that both Mexico and Portugal are… playing pretty well.

Pretty solidly indeed, actually.

Portugal has already punched their ticket to the knockout stages of the World Cup, and all Mexico needs to do to secure top spot in their Group is not lose to Sweden tonight.

Should that happen, not only will Mexico advance to the knockout stages, but they’ll be placed in a different half of the bracket than Portugal.

Which means the only way the two barnstorming teams can meet in this tournament…

…is in the final.

Or possibly the third place playoff, sure. But still, it holds water.

Weirdly enough, if The Simpsons prediction winds up being true, a strange amount of people are willing to part with their hair, among other things.

‘Course there’s others hoping there’s salvation for their nation hidden in an old episode somewhere as well.

If by some miracle both Mexico and Portugal wind up in the cup final, and there’s a sequence where the halfback passes to centre, back to wing, back to centre, and centre holds it, holds it, holds it, then… Look I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest Matt Groening be tried as a witch, to be perfectly honest.
