The Best Sports Celebrations Of All Time

Australian sports fans don’t get a whole lot in the way of post try/goal/touchdown celebration action. The NRL stamped out the growing trend a few years ago because it was seen as contrary to the principles of the game and Digby Ioane copped plenty of flak for being a showboat after his post-try jigs became a regular fixture. It’s a fine line and one in which most fans would rather see our sport stars tread more often. Nottingham Forest striker Billy Sharp achieved viral stardom this week with a post-goal first after he celebrated his goal against Blackpool by finding a Nottingham fan and asking for a bite of his hotdog. The fan obliged, naturally.

Here’s some of our favourites:

Digby Ioane enjoyed the best form of his career as the Reds claimed the 2011 Super Rugby Championship. Ioane’s joy spilled over into some pretty excellent post try celebrations. The best? The ‘super dougie’!

Randall ‘the thrill’ Hill was one of the best college recievers of all time. He also came up with this pioneering touchdown celebration three years before Forest Gump was even released. Run Randall, run!

The best celebrations are premeditated to some degree but Joe Horn took that shiz to a whole nuther level. Playing at the un-family friendly Sunday night time slot, Horn scored a touch down and retrieved a pre-positioned mobile phone from behind the post padding and gave his kids a call. Horn’s “Look, Daddy’s on TV” stunt cost him $30,000. Probably worth it.

The NRL had a brief love-affair with the post try celebrations. To the players credit, they came up with some pretty good ones. The ten pin bowler gets a highly comendable but the best by far was Mark Ridell’s legendary effort where he jumped the fence, sat down and clapped his own try. Tip of the hat Piggy.

Simplicity can be the key to a truly memorable celebration, especially if it’s to become your trademark which you perform after every goal. Danny Briere fist pump has become legendary within the NHL. Crunch it!

Golf is a bit of a post-celebration roughie. It’s a little bit slower, refined, and calculated. Bending a 3 iron around a tree after a slice, yeah I can relate to that, but doing a jig after a monster putt… well I guess I’ve never had the opportunity. Tiger Woods had (and is slowly reclaiming) an excellent fist pump in his golden years. Maybe he was just stoked his round was over and he could go and party with porn stars?

This Premier League classic sees Jimmy Bullard totally ripping on the coach’s half time speech. The celebration signalled Bullard as one funny dude but he probably found himself on the bench next week as a result.

There might be something in the water in Iceland? Stjarnan FC have an unparalleled reputation for kooky goal celebrations. Lucky for them they score plenty of goals. In this collection we have the wind-up toy which is pretty sweet, a stumbling striker which is just a bit odd, but then comes the birthing scene… bravo!

Ok, one Stjarnan FC clip is never enough which is lucky because the ‘fishing’ celebration is probably one of the best ever!
