The AFL Women’s Debut Clash Was A Blockbusting Sign Of Things To Come

Australian sporting history was made tonight.

For the first time, two professional women’s AFL teams duked it out in a dedicated league match, heralding a bloody excellent future for Australia’s own sport.

Under the lights of Princes Park in Melbourne, Carlton and Collingwood opened the AFL Women’s competition with gusto, keeping nearly 25,000 footy-mad fans absolutely rapt.

The Blues ran out winners, keeping the Pies at bay 7.4 (46) against 1.5 (11).
Collingwood gun and pre-season star Moana Hope was largely kept at bay during the contest, while Carlton’s Darcy Vescio made herself known with a stellar four majors and a number of vital marks:

Punters went absolutely wild at the scrappy match. Such was crowd enthusiasm that gates had to be closed to stop the grounds from being flooded with fans.

Regardless, those on-site and watching from home were all a-bloody-bout it:

Hell, AFL head honcho Gillon McLachlan even toured around outside to apologise to fans locked out of the game.
You can get the lowdown on how this already-magnificent comp operates right here, while we all enjoy the knowledge this is a thing, it’s actually happening, and it’s so. Bloody. Good.
