Earlier today, Facebook users around this fine nation were left utterly fucking bewildered by a “meme”.
Not because it was especially spicy – in fact, it could be argued that comparing former AFL champ Adam Goodes to a dead gorilla is notably bereft of spice – but because such flagrantly racist bullshittery was right there, on Facebook, at bloody all.
By others, we mean the AFL, who are apparently all about rampant shit-talking – as long as it doesn’t verge into flagrantly racist territory.
The ABC reports the league’s spokesman Patrick Keane let rip on the matter. In a statement, Keane reckoned the post was “appallingly offensive,” and “the AFL immediately acted as soon as we were made aware of it.”
“We’re extremely pleased it’s been removed… but [it] shouldn’t have been posted in the first place.”
This is clear, though: the page went ahead and posted another Goodes meme straight after.
Elsewhere, notable shield-bearers against hateful online BS celebrated the original post’s absence:
With any luck, salty and racist attempts at humour getting roundly shitcanned will become a fully-fledged meme in its own right.
