Six Charged Over 95 Deaths In 1989’s Horrific Hillsborough Stadium Tragedy

British prosecutors have changed six people over the 1989 Hillsborough stadium disaster which resulted in the deaths of 96 football fans.
Two police officers were charged, including David Duckenfield, who was the commander on the day, and the former chief of South Yorkshire Police, Norman Bettision.
The Hillsborough tragedy unfolded when a standing-room section of the stadium in Sheffield was flooded by over 2,000 Liverpool fans for the match against Nottingham Forest. The victims were crushed, smashed against anti-riot fences and trampled underfoot.
“Criminal proceedings have now commenced and the defendants have a right to a fair trial,” said Sue Hemming, the head prosecutor for special crime and counter terror.
Much of the anger around Hillsborough is centred around the response afterwards, where police and sections of the media – including, prominently, The Sun newspaper – tried to blame rowdy Liverpool fans and hooligans for the event.
Louise Brooks, who lost her brother in the tragedy, told Channel 4 News that it was well overdue.
I feel angry and sad that again my mum and dad have been declined the right of being here with me. There’s a lot of Hillsborough families that haven’t lived to see this day. When you’ve fought for something for so long … you know how it consumes my life and the other families’ lives. People don’t understand the effect fighting something like this has on you, the toll it has on you.

I hope Hillsborough families have shown the public not just in this country but around the world that if you never give up, you stay united and you’re strong and you always fight for what you believe in then one day hopefully you will see the light at the end of the tunnel.
It’s absolutely disgraceful, nobody knows the hell we’ve gone through and all this could have been over and done with 28 years ago. Families could have got on with their lives.

It’s a pretty big thing for those who lost loved ones – let’s hope they find some closure through these proceedings.
