Our Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Mascot Was Clearly Drawn In AutoCAD

In 2018, the Gold Coast is going to host the Commonwealth Games. An event that you’d be forgiven for not knowing was going to happen.

The quadrennial gathering of the colonies to witness Australia dominate in sports we otherwise don’t have much of a global footing in is returning to familiar shores for the games’ 21st iteration in exactly 2 years time.
Ahead of the April 4th, 2018 opening ceremony, the City of the Gold Coast today revelled in the revelation of the games’ official mascot: A blue koala named Borobi.
The surfing dude (pronounced Borra-be, and not Bore-OH-be) was lowered down on a winch by the QLD Surf Life Saving helicopter in a media event on Burleigh beach this morning.

The animated critter, a surfing koala whose grey fur was turned blue thanks to “countless wipeouts” over the years, comes complete with his own Twitter account which is already stuffed to the gills with public relations-approved humour.

It’s probably best not to think too hard about why a cow was there as well. Probably.

The mascot’s slick launch video shows off some of the indigenous inspiration behind Borobi’s design, which was the result of a public competition and a little professional consultation.

‘Course, it would not be a cartoonish public figure in Australia without Australian citizens mercilessly taking the ever-loving piss out of it. Which we’ve gleefully been doing all morning.

But sarcasm aside, the Gold Coast’s mayor Tom Tate stated that the mascot is “everything,” and that “we love him.” And the cute little guy will subsequently feature heavily in the promotion of the games – an event that’s expected to create thousands of jobs for the region, and rake in millions upon millions in tourist dollars.

Best of luck to you, Borobi, and your attempts to clear the dizzyingly high bar set by Fatso the Fat-Arsed Wombat, whose spirit and arse remain the unequivocal GOAT.
