Nick Kyrgios Crashes Out Of The US Open In The 1st Round W/ A Shoulder Injury

Nick Kyrgios has crashed out of the US Open in his first round match against fellow Aussie John Millman – all while visibly frustrated by a persistent shoulder injury.

It’s the conclusion of a mega rough Grand Slam season for Kyrgios, who exited in the first round at Wimbledon and in the second round of both the French Open and the Australian Open.

Millman took the match out 6-3 1-6 6-4 6-1, progressing to the second round in New York for the first time.

There were flashes of the technical brilliance which we’ve come to know from Kyrgios – like this perfect lob – but ultimately it wasn’t enough to overcome the troubled tennis star’s injury.Kyrgios called for the trainer during the second game of the third set, at one point even asking a ball boy to stretch out his right arm.

Kyrgios called for his trainer during the third set as his shoulder began to fail him, and at one point had a ballboy help him stretch it out.

“I wasn’t feeling it at all and then on one serve I lost power in my arm. Just on my serve,” Kyrgios said afterwards.

“One serve, then completely dead. It’s so dead and numb. It’s incredibly weak. It’s just so annoying.”

Umpire Carlos Ramos at one point issued a code violation after a linesman reported Kyrgios swearing. “I didn’t swear. You can’t give me a code. You don’t even know what I said,” Kyrgios replied heatedly.

Millman said afterwards that it was a “hollow victory” on account of Kyrgios’ injury:

It’s a victory, but a hollow victory. I know in the back on my mind his shoulder deteriorated at the match went on. He’s a teammate. I feel for him. I really do.
