It has not been an excellent 48 hours for Aussie tennis megastar Nick Kyrgios.
Following last night’s dramatic Round 2 departure from the Australian Open at the hands of Italian Andreas Seppi, Kyrgios has been fined over $7,000 for venting his frustrations.
In case you missed it, the 21-year-old gave his racquet a good ol’ toss after sacrificing a point:
That indiscretion resulted in him being docked $3,323 for “racquet abuse.” The remaining $3,988 was comprised of a fine for swearing loud enough to be noticed.
Kyrgios’ 1-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 10-8 loss to the world #152 has apparently prompted the bloke to ponder his coachless strategy. In a press conference, he told reporters “the coach is always a question mark for me.”
“I think that’s one area where I obviously need to start taking a bit more seriously.”
Last year, Kyrgios was on the wrong end of some serious fines as a result of weird on-court behaviour. After apparently throwing a Shanghai Masters match against Mischa Sverev, Kyrgios copped US $40K in penalties.
After that whole ordeal, his Aus Open departure probably isn’t the start to 2017 he’d been hoping for.
