Despite learning of his older brother’s tragic death just hours before competing in the Billabong Pipe Masters in Oahu, Hawaii, Aussie legend Mick Fanning mustered up the inner strength to pull off a spectacular quarter-final performance.
Clearly struggling to keep his emotions in check through the day, Fanno gave an emotional interview just after making it through round 5, telling media:
“It’s been a huge day. Just got some personal stuff going on at home, and just yeah, it’s sort of heavy to talk about right now,” he said, fighting back tears. “I dunno, I’m just sort of cruisin’, just trying to live.”
Boards down for the day, Mick has just now taken to Instagram to pay tribute to his late brother Peter, who’s believed to have passed away in his sleep from causes unknown.
“Like all my big brothers, Peter will always be a hero to me,” he wrote. “I have so many great memories of the good times we have all spent together and they will be with me forever. We recently caught up and he told me how proud he was of me and how much he loves watching me compete.”
RIP Pete.
