Just like every year, the Melbourne Cup is gone and done in a flash. The winning horse was Cross Counter, coming ahead of Marmelo and A Prince of Arran.

“What a thrill,” said winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy, while cheering, possibly leaning on the side of understatement given he had just seconds earlier won the Cup. It’s McEvoy’s third Melbourne Cup win.
Yucatan, the horse which was tipped to win at $6, did not in fact win, or even make the top three. Sorry to those who take the bookies word as gospel.
Even the rain – which spent the previous several hours drenching Melbourne’s social set – turned down just before the race.
Well, that’s it then. Whether ya like it or not, it’ll probably be back next year. Hoo roo!
