Legendary Boxer And Cultural Icon Muhammad Ali Has Died, Aged 74

Legendary boxer Muhammad Ali has died, aged 74.

He had been admitted to hospital several days ago, for a respiratory condition brought on by his Parkinson’s Disease. 

Bouts such as 1974’s Rumble In The Jungle and 1975’s Thrilla In Manila became iconic moments in sporting history, when Ali proved his mettle against George Foreman and Joe Frazier.

Known as much for his groundbreaking political and religious standpoints as for his peerless form in the ring, Ali suffered the disease for over three decades. 

Throughout his life, the man born Cassius Clay served was a pioneer in the sport as well as in civil rights; he tirelessly countered racism in his career, aligned himself with controversial figures such as Malcolm X, and was a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War. 

A spokesman for the family confirmed his death to NBC.

Luminaries in the sport have already spoken on Ali’s legacy.
