Kiwi Fighter Jason Lee Stuck In Rio Home After Corrupt Cops Track Him Down

We joked about it a little bit yesterday, because the Rio Olympics are fast approaching and goddamn everything about it is screaming “absolute trainwreck.” But the situation surrounding the temporary kidnapping of Kiwi fighter Jason Lee is getting scarier by the second.

Yesterday we reported on Lee’s encounter with corrupt officials from Brazil’s notorious Policia Militar (the military police, basically) who more or less kidnapped Lee under false pretences, drove him to an ATM, and forced him to withdraw the equivalent of about AUD$820 to pay them off before releasing him and demanding he not report the issue.
Lee, however, did not heed that warning, and made a report to the Civil Police before the story subsequently made headlines around the globe.
Overnight, the situation got serious, and now Lee and his partner are holed up in their Rio apartment after the policia militar showed up at his doorstep, despite previous assurances that they would not be able to access his personal information from a complaint made to the civil cops.
Lee issued a series of tweets early this morning stating the military cops rocked up to his building’s foyer, but he refused them access to his residence and immediately contacted both the civil police and the New Zealand Embassy.

Lee’s girlfriend, journalist Laura McQuillan, has given further updates stating that civil police authorities had arrived on the scene and were with the pair.

This whole thing is bloody terrifying, TBH. And we all sincerely hope both Lee & McQuillan find a safe and reasonable solution to this whole mess.

UPDATE: McQuillan has tweeted some additional information on the situation.
