St Kilda’s Jack Steven Interrupted A Snooze Of A Footy Game With An Insane Goal

Jack Steven St Kilda Goal Of The Year Maddie's Match Richmond AFL Jack Riewoldt

How good is Friday night footy?! Well, usually it’s a fun time, but for the past two weeks the Fri night fixture has been a bit of a fizzer. Last week it was 15th-placed St Kilda taking on 18th-placed Carlton (which saw the Saints win by 64 points) and this week St Kilda got the primetime slot again, this time taking on top team Richmond and copping a 54-point spanking of their own.

In fact, the game was so one-sided and blah that I decided to log on and write this story instead of watching it. 5 hours since I clocked off on a Friday arvo. Desperate times, you see.

But the real reason I came here is to share to sole highlight of the game with you – this absolute ripper of a goal from St Kilda midfielder Jack Steven, which TV commentating legend Bruce McAvaney immediately proclaimed to be the “Goal of the Year”, amid other noises that sounded disturbingly orgasmic.

After two Tigers defenders punched the ball in an effort to foil the efforts of several looming Saints, it flew into the path of an on-the-run Steven, who at a near-impossible angle tapped the ball through the posts.

Take a look at this, would you:

Even though when he kicked the goal his team was getting absolutely drilled by the other team, that insane effort will no doubt keep Steven feeling pretty pleased with himself til next round.

The two teams played at Etihad Stadium for the annual Maddie’s Match, raising awareness and funds for Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision, a charity set up in the name of Maddie Riewoldt who passed away in 2015 of bone marrow failure.

The sister of former Saint Nick Riewoldt and cousin of current Tiger Jack Riewoldt, Maddie’s courageous fight has prompted members of the public and the Australian government to donate millions of dollars to fund research into bone marrow failure syndromes. This year’s Maddie’s Match raised over $1.4million.
