Investigation Into Kyrigos’ On-Court Sledge Could Lead To 3 Year Ban, Additional Fines

Calls for Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios to receive further punishment for his on-court sledge against Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka have swelled, as the Association of Tennis Professionals launch a formal investigation into Kyrgios’ comments.

On Thursday, 20-year-old Canberran tennis star Nick Kyrgios copped global criticism for sledging Stan Wawrinka, after a microphone picked up Kyrgios saying, “Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend, sorry to tell you that mate.”

Overnight, the Women’s Tennis Association Tour chairman Stacey Allaster and former tennis star Martina Navratilova both demanded greater punishment for Kyrgios, while ATP assesses the incident, and could decide to extend Kyrgios’ US$12,500 standing fine.

“I commend the ATP on assessing the on-site maximum fine and urge there to be further sanctions in accordance with their process,” Allaster said, according to Fox Sports. On twitter, Martina Navratilova said “I think there also needs to be more than just a fine,” in relation to Kyrgios’ current punishment.

According to Bloomberg Business, ATP could issue a fine of up to $100,000 to Kyrgios, and could also ban the tennis player from competing in ATP tournaments for up to three years.

While Kyrgios already has apologised for his actions and has been on the receiving-end of criticism around the world; Nick mate, here’s a freebie: loose lips sink ships.
