Ian Thorpe Wins Humanitarian Award

Ian Thorpe has ended a tumultuous year on a high by accepting the Australian Human Rights Medal for his charity work with Indigenous children. Thorpe’s charity, Fountain For Youth, has long focused on the the health and education issues that face indigenous youth in remote communities.

In his typically classy fashion, Thorpe was quick to share the credit with the people working out in the communities. “I’d also like to dedicate this award to the people that are
on the ground that do this work on a daily basis that contributes to
communities that I don’t
,” he said.”I am able to raise the
profile around issues that Indigenous people are facing, the troubles
that they may have and also the triumphs and successes that they have in
those communities
.”

Without getting all Kumbaya on your asses, it good to see a one of our sporting greats setting a practical example on how to use a public profile to promote social change – especially during a year where the culture within the Australian swim team suffered a continued decline as a result of enduring immaturity and self-absorption from some of its prominent members

Thorpe’s dedication to becoming more than just a star athlete was highlighted by Australian Human Rights Commission President, Professor Gillian Triggs, as the major factor in the judges decision. “Ian Thorpe is more than a great Olympian –
he has demonstrated a strong and enduring commitment to ensuring that
vulnerable children are given the opportunity to realise their full
potential
.” Well done Thorpie!
