Hawthorn Great Luke Hodge Announces He’s Retiring At The End Of Season 2017

After 16 years and four premeriships, AFL and Hawthorn Hawks legend Luke Hodge has announced that he will be hanging up the boots at the end of the 2017 season.

He made the announcement today at the Hawks’ home ground, Waverley Park, noting that he’s stepping down from the team to spend time with the fam and allow younger players to make their debut for the squad.
“I’m still passionate about footy and I still love running out with the boys each week, but I’m really looking forward to spending more time with my family,” Hodgey said this afternoon.

“Given where the club is at, I know there are several guys knocking down the door and I’m more than happy to step aside for them.”

Hodgey captained the Hawks for six years, and in three of those led the team right up to the grand final on that Sunday in September, winning all three consecutively in 2013, 2014, and 2015 . He’s also picked up the Norm Smith Medal for best on ground in both 2008 and 2014 grand finals. A bloody solid effort, if you ask me.

He will be playing his 300th game for Hawthorn this weekend against the Geelong Cats at the MCG, which places him in the same league as other 300-gamers like Brendon Goddard, Nick Reiwoldt, Sam Mitchell, Shane Crawford, Adam Goodes, and Bob Murphy.
Let’s just say that Chad Wingard won’t be missing the big fella, because who can forget this absolute belter.
Now everyone cast your eyes on his three kiddos, and pray to God there will be a Hodgey father-son dynasty in the future.
