France Smacks Croatia 4-2 To Bring Home The 2018 World Cup

Those who truly deeply care about football will already be well aware of this fact, but here goes for the people at the back: France has triumphed over Croatia in a 4-2 victory to take home the World Cup.

It was an incredibly entertaining match, with Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba bringing home the final two team goals in a short, rapid-fire blitz which pushed the French side beyond the very hungry Croatian opposition. Considering the fact that Croatia held possession for well over half of the game, it was a very, very strong finish for France.

French president Emmanuel Macron looked like he was enjoying it, at least.

France led 2-1 at halftime thanks in large part to an extremely unfortunate own goal from Mario Mandzukic, who later somewhat redeemed himself thanks to some weak goalkeeping from France’s Hugo Lloris.

19-year-old Mbappe became only the second teenager after Pelé himself to score in a World Cup final. To be fair, it’s a pretty open field when it comes to that record, given that Mbappe is literally the first teenager to even play in a World Cup final since Pelé did back in 1958.

Speaking of records: French coach Didier Deschamps is now the third person in history to have won the World Cup both as a player and as a coach, after Brazil‘s Mario Zagallo and Germany‘s Franz Beckenbauer. Nice little notch in your belt if you can do it.

Croatia’s Luka Modric was rewarded with the golden ball for player of the tournament, while Mbappe unsurprisingly scored the best young player award for his incredible showing.

There you go, team. In the immortal words of Alan Partridge: this is liquid football.
