Former Essendon Football Club coach James Hird is in hospital recovering from an “intentional poisoning overdose,” Channel 7 reports.
Late last night, Hird had an ambulance called to his Melbourne home in response to a “major” health scare, and he was subsequently treated at Cabrini Hospital in Malvern. He is currently receiving treatment at a second facility.
Hird – who was once an avid footy player and Brownlow medallist as well as a coach – was embroiled in Essendon Football Club’s supplement-taking scandal, which became public knowledge in 2012 but has had an enduring impact on the club and its players.
It is unknown what Hird took last night. We’ll update this story as it develops, and we wish him a speedy recovery.
