Elite Gymnast Breaks Both Legs After Cooking A Landing In A Competition

If there’s something you can always depend on us to provide you when they arise, it’s gruesome sporting injuries. Always happy to move the needle on the ‘gruesome sporting injuries’ front.

Okay, this one is pretty bad though. Samantha Cerio, a senior gymnast from Auburn University over in the US had to be carried out from a regional NCAA event on a stretcher – to a standing ovation – after sustaining severe leg injuries during a bung landing.

Cerio was attempting a handspring double front with a blind landing when she hit the mat awkwardly. The exact nature of her injuries has not been confirmed by authorities, but Nola.com asserts she dislocated both knees and broke both legs. Which is truly awful.

Here’s the video. I don’t need to tell you that it is quite graphic.

“It was pretty tough to watch,” Auburn coach Jeff Graba said after the meet. “She’s a trouper. The last thing she said was, ‘Go help the girls.’ The girls rallied around her. They’re doing this for her right now.”

The rest of the team rallied around Cerio using the hashtag #StickItForSam.

Cerio took to Instagram on Monday to announce the end of her gymnastics career.

“Friday night was my final night as a gymnast. After 18 years I am hanging up my grips and leaving the chalk behind. I couldn’t be prouder of the person that gymnastics has made me to become.”

“It’s taught me hard work, humility, integrity, and dedication, just to name a few.”
