David Campese Rubbishes Female Sports Reporting

David Campese the rugby player was famous for his bamboozling goose-step. Now he’s famous for just being a goose. Often playing the role of the staunch and outspoken critic of the game, Campese is always good for a headline and occasionally prompts a meaningful discussion about the state of the game. This morning however, Campo got a few people’s ‘knickers in a knot‘* after questioning the SMH’s decision to send a female reporter to cover the Wallabies spring tour.

* Campo probably didn’t choose the best idiom in response to the immediate criticism but at least he was keeping true to form.

Well what did you expect Campo, you silly sexist ass? Not that the controversy looks set to effect Campese’s target Georgina Robinson, with Managing Editor of Sport for Fairfax Media Ian Fuge rubbishing Campese’s outburst in a statement today.

“Fairfax Media is lucky to have Georgina. I couldn’t be happier with the
quality of her coverage of the rugby round and nor could our readers,”
Fuge said. “In a short space of time she has become a vital voice in
the sport. I am staggered that anyone would criticise any sports
reporter because of their gender. Georgina wasn’t chosen for the rugby
writer’s role on the basis of her gender and neither should her work be
judged as such.”

After having a flick through Robinson’s work, we can’t fathom where Campese is coming from but at least we’re not alone…
