Brownlow Favorites Buck Top 8 Trend

If either Gary Ablett ($4.50), Trent Cotchin ($4.50), or Jobe Watson ($4.75) win the Brownlow Medal tonight, they will be the first players from clubs that finished out side the top 8 to do so since Shane Crawford in 1999. Votes are tallied after each regular season game with the umpires using a 3-2-1 for the best three on ground which stands to disadvantage players from losing teams as the best on ground is usually awarded on a player from the winning team. Gary Ablett’s task looms the toughest with the Gold Coast Suns winning only three matches while Crochin’s Richmond Tigers fared better with 10 victories while Watson’s Essendon Bombers snagged 11. Grand Final bound Hawk Sam Mitchell ($8) and Sydney Swan Josh Kennedy ($13) have had excellent seasons while fellow finalists and Adelaide Crows teammates Patrick Dangerfield ($8) and Scott Thompson ($8) were pivotal in their teams charge to the finals as were Collingwood Magpies pair Dane Swan ($15) and Dayne Beams ($17).

Of coarse the actual competition is but a part of the night with the many of the players’ wives and girlfriends upstageing their partners via their red carpet exploits. And who knows, maybe someone will let Brendan Fevola in?
