Boxer Arrested, Detained After Alleged Sexual Assault In Olympic Village

A 22-year-old boxer from the Moroccan Olympic team is in custody in Rio de Janeiro, following allegations that he sexually assaulted two cleaners in his room at the Athletes Village.
Brazilian police say that Hassan Saada was arrested on Friday morning, local time, following the alleged assault, which occurred on Wednesday morning.
Saada was due to compete in the men’s light heavy division early Sunday morning, Australian time, but a judge ordered that he be held in preventative detention for 15 days, pending an investigation.
Local website G1 report that Saada called the housekeepers into his room on the pretext of asking them a question, then “improperly touched” at least one of them, squeezing her breast and trying to kiss her.

The women reportedly managed to escape; reports allege that there were two other athletes in the room at the time, and while their role is unclear, no further arrests have been made.
Rio police deputy Carolina Salomao told G1:

“We hope this will serve as an example. It’s a great disrespect, independent of the culture. It’s the law that counts … There are rumours there have been other cases in the Olympic Village.”
