Tomorrow’s AFL Grand Final will be won in the midfield if Norm Smith Medal betting is anything to go by. With a heavy track predicted, clearance out of the middle will be hard fought but it will give both teams the opportunity to utalise their star mid-fields. The Hawk’s Sam Mitchell ($5.50) and the Swans’ Josh Kennedy ($7) have been slated as favorites by bookies while fellow mid-fielders Brad Sewell ($9), Luke Hodge ($9), Kieren Jack ($14), and Jude Bolton ($14) have also been heavily backed. Lance Franklin ($9) and Cyril Rioli ($11) are the major deviations from the theory but their current form was always going to see them feature prominently.
The focus on the midfield has also thrown up some pretty good value roughies. Sydney’s key defender Ted Richards ($51), will have the monumental task of of marking Lance Franklin but if he can keep the big man contained, he will be sure to score bonus marks with judges. Same goes for Hawthorn’s Jack Gunston ($41). The young forward has had an excellent year and if the Swans keep Franklin and Rioli on a tight leash, Gunston could write himself into to the AFL record books if he can land a few crucial majors.
