Blues’ Trent Merrin Faces 1 Month Suspension For Dangerous Origin Lift

The NSW Blues‘ crushing loss to the Maroons in last night’s Origin decider wasn’t only a massive one (52-6); it wasn’t the cleanest of defeats, either.

The ABC reports that NSW heavyweights Beau Scott, Trent Merrin and James Tamou may all face time in the sin bin via temporary NRL bans, following a series of dangerous tackles.

Trent Merrin could sit out four games after staging an illegal lift against Queensland’s Corey Parker; the ban could increase to five games if Merrin loses an appeal to the judiciary. Merrin’s lift—with the assistance of Trent Hodkinson—saw Parker dropped on his neck in an ugly display.

Meanwhile, Beau Scott and James Tamou will miss one game apiece, for offences against Cameron Smith and Jacob Lilyman respectively.

Queensland coach Mal Maninga told reporters he was content for the Judiciary to hand out suspensions for the trio, saying, “They’ve been booked so let the judiciary deal with that. It’s fairly evident to me there should be charges … and we’ll see how it gets dealt with through the week.”
