B-Baller Liz Cambage Offers To Educate Teammates After Blackface Snafu

Surprise: sometimes, sizeable rifts form between members of Australia’s peak sporting teams. It’s shocking, but it’s true, and even today Bernard Tomic let rip on his compatriot Nick Kyrgios’s *cough cough* illness.

Dealing with a teammate’s sickie (if Kyrgios isn’t actually ill) is almost a legitimate reason to chuck a tanty, but it ain’t much compared to discovering a white colleague decided to don blackface for a costume party.

Of course, that’s where Liz Cambage found herself last month after fellow Opal Alice Kunek slathered herself brown as Kanye West. Reminder:

Now, in an effort to pre-empt that sorta thing from happening again, the basketballer has made an open offer to educate her teammates.

“I’ve reached out to Anthony Moore,” she said, speaking of Basketball Australia’s head honcho, before explaining “I’ve just given up my services to see if anyone – members of the board, players -– want to sit down and talk with me about race issues in sport.”

Speaking to Channel 9, the Olympian’s offer follows confirmation from the sport’s peak national body that it’d be discussing racial issues too in the ever-shortening time before the Rio Olympics

FWIW, things seem to have chilled between Kunek and Cambage. The former issued a total mea culpa in following the incident, and Cambage also said today that she maybe shouldn’t have put her on full blast.

Whether anyone involved accepts Cambage’s offer is up in the air. Until then, anyone looking to educate themselves on the correct way to use blackface should feel free to refer to this handy-dandy how-to guide.
